I planned to spend the day after our wedding at home, getting to know Katia. But after she threw up her stomach contents, which consisted of mostly liquor and stomach acid, she crawled back into bed and passed out.

Shortly after, my phone rings, Pavel’s name flashing across the screen. “Stefan,” his tone is short and he reaches his point quickly. “I want you to meet me I sent an address.”

I glance around my penthouse before agreeing. “Alright, I’ll head over know.

Jogging upstairs, I scrawl a quick note for Katia. I fight the lingering shame from my wet dream this morning, while I put it on her nightstand, prior to leaving the penthouse.

Following my GPS, I drive into a rundown area of Brooklyn. The cracked asphalt is lined with brick buildings that were once a crucial part of the industrial age, but now appear mostly abandoned.

Double checking the address, I drive to the end of the row, then pull through an opening in the chain-link fence. Parking in the large lot, I scope out the building. It’s in slightly better repair than the others, but not much. A niggling in the back of my brain wonders if this is a trap, but I tamp down the feeling.

I shoot a quick message to Pavel, “I’m here.”

After a brief wait, a large metal door attached to the side of the building opens, revealing a man in a black beanie, t-shirt, and a dark pair of jeans. He looks around, before my idling car catches his eye.

He motions for me to pull into the open bay. Angling my vehicle, I drive into the warehouse. I glance around as I drive, seeing there’s plenty of cars parked inside, which explains the empty lot outside.

I jump out of my car and the man with the beanie leads me down a connecting hallway. Pavel is standing at the end and waves me over. “Stefan, glad you could make it. You’ve hinted at wondering more about the business. Now that you’re part of the family, I thought I could show you.”

My nod prompts Pavel to push open a door and stride through. I trail behind him, stopping by his side in front of a metal railing that overlooks a large, windowless room. On the floor below, workers are sorting bricks wrapped in plastic, while others cut them open and break them down into white powder.

Men armed with Remington rifles pace up and down the aisles, watching over the workers to ensure they don’t slack off.

I survey the room, noticing how the men and women hunch over their tables in fear whenever one of the Bratva walks by them. The armed men joke across the room to each other. Their Russian words drift upwards, barely audible from where we stand.

“What I this place?” I ask, turning to Pavel. Although I have an idea, I want him to explain the importance of this piece of property in his overall operation.

“It’s one of the biggest warehouses the Bratva owns. In here we cut down product.
